The BIOPOLISTA team member Adrien Ludot published a blog article on the website of World Sufficiency Lab titled “Beyond the Thermodynamic Wall: Why Sufficiency Must Drive Our Biomass Future”.
In the article, Adrien Ludot connects the principle of sufficiency to the emerging role of biomass in replacing fossil fuels. After introducing the concept of the “thermodynamic wall”— the natural limit we face in phasing out fossil materials and energy carriers—he explores its implications for the agricultural sector and the broader bioeconomy.
He concludes that we must fundamentally rethink and reshape how agricultural outputs are produced and used, by decoupling production from fossil fuel dependencies and prioritizing material uses of biomass. According to Ludot, these goals cannot be achieved in an equitable and ecologically sustainable way unless the principle of sufficiency is embraced. This means that, through democratic decision-making, clear priorities must be established for how limited biomass resources are used.
